  LASIK Co-Management

LASIK is an acronym for Laser Assisted In-Situ Keratomileusis, which means “to reshape the cornea by using a laser. Individuals who suffer from myopia (nearsightedness) with or without astigmatism or hyperopia (farsightedness) with or without astigmatism can choose laser vision correction as an alternative to contact lenses or eyeglasses.

With the LASIK procedure, a thin flap is created in the top layer of the cornea with the IntraLase femtosecond laser or a microkeratome, forming a "corneal cap". The laser is then used to remove a thin layer of tissue from the cornea under the flap. The cap is then returned to its natural position, creating a healthy surface within 24 hours. This re-shaping of the cornea helps the eye focus properly, thus reducing or eliminating the need for contact lenses or eyeglasses.

After the surgery, patients may experience moderate burning or itching in the eye. For many patients the vision will be greatly improved, whereas for others, variable improvement will be noticed with greater improvement as the eyes continue to heal. This depends on the amount of astigmatism present at the time of surgery. Eye drops will be prescribed. The face however should not be placed under water for at least two weeks. In most cases, patients are able to return to work in a matter of a few days. Most activities may be resumed almost immediately.
